The Dallas Mavericks are trying to figure out how to break out of their early-season funk, but a couple of things are standing in the way. They lost to the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday night, 118-104, in just another offensively problematic game, and they still have the league's lowest offensive rating.
When it comes to their lack of offensive output, especially in the modern era, they are getting close to historically low levels. This is primarily because Nico Harrison chose to put offence ahead of defense, as he did when he traded Luka Doncic for Anthony Davis . Amidst all of this, a parody X account started the rumor that Mav’s coach, Nico Harrison has been reportedly fired.
Rumors swirl as Dallas Mavericks’ front office faces growing backlash amid offensive collapse and outrage
Dallas' guards and wings were aggressive in their pursuits to the rim, but they were unable to generate enough looks in the paint to overcome their poor shooting, which has been evident on several occasions this season. The Mavericks once again struggled mightily to convert on open 3-point looks.
A significant turning point for Dallas was the trade of Luka Doncic for Anthony Davis, which swiftly caused division among the fan base. They are now on a four-game losing streak, despite what at first appeared to be a new beginning following the selection of Cooper Flagg.
Harrison's trade of one of the best offensive hubs in the NBA for a 32-year-old two-way play finisher with questionable health is obviously a defense-for-offense trade that was a criminal move to make in today's NBA. The Mavericks' perimeter defense has started the season fairly well, and their rim protection has been strong in the few games.
Grant Hughes, a journalist for Bleacher Report, criticized general manager Nico Harrison for the roster's creation. He said:
"Who would have thought that a team intending to start two centers and three power forwards might struggle to generate shots? The Mavs have succumbed to a handful of injuries of late, most notably Anthony Davis' lower leg issues, so they haven't played quite as big as they otherwise would have."
He added:
"As a result, Dallas has the third-worst half-court scoring efficiency in the league, trailing only the New Orleans Pelicans and Indiana Pacers. Indy is missing half its roster due to injury, and it's mostly the good half. The Pelicans engaged in self-sabotage over the summer, are coming unglued and seem moments away from firing head coach Willie Green. So you could argue the Mavs have the worst offense in the league if you only count actual NBA teams."
Bobby Karalla of the DLLS Mavericks even stated getting numerous texts implying that owner Patrick Dumont "is going to be left with no choice" if the Mavericks keep losing games. The numerous Mavericks supporters who yell "Fire Nico" throughout their games at the American Airlines Centre will find it amusing. However, Mavs representatives haven't yet confirmed the rumor of Nico getting fired.
