While gardening, one expects to come across deep-rooted weeds, worms in the soil, and occasional clumps of clay.
However, a man was taken aback when he unearthed a "spooky box" hidden beneath some paving stones as he rearranged his outdoor space.
Sharing his discovery online, he stated: "I found a cool time capsule/memorial box while doing some gardening. I was lifting some slabs in the garden, and after moving some gravel and dirt, I discovered this eerie little box.
"Not entirely sure what to make of it, but it contains some intriguing mementos and a charming sketch of a young woman with 'Odette' inscribed on the back."
He noted the box had sustained "a fair amount of fire damage" but remarkably withstood the elements over the years.
Hoping to present it to the family of whoever buried it there approximately 90 years ago, he said: "The only identifiable information is 'Odette' written on the back of the drawing. But the pocket companion was published in 1939."
Responding to his post, one user commented: "Maybe it's the combination of wax, burn marks, and that ominous-looking symbol, but I'm pretty sure you've just unleashed an apocalypse-style curse."
In a follow-up, he shared how he managed to locate the previous homeowner and contacted their relative, named Lyn.
He learned the box was interred by Lyn's late mother's sister - but she was completely unaware of it until now.
The man continued: "Lyn moved into the house for a time. She said she didn't feel comfortable there. The house was originally owned by her mum's sister, Odette, who lived there until her death in the early '80s.
"Lyn recognised the sketch, necklaces, and butterfly brooch as Odette's. She didn't know much about her, as she apparently kept to herself.
"Lyn also mentioned that she knows Odette was widowed for some time and had no children.
"Both her mum and Odette were practicing Wiccans but fell out frequently over the church. The church disbanded when Lyn was a teenager, sometime in the '60s.
"It was run out of Odette's home and only consisted of four other women. I showed her the articles, and she said that, as Odette was her mum's only sister, she must have been married to the man whose grave was sadly robbed - or to the brother also mentioned.
"She thinks she has some of Odette's belongings among her mum's."
Following their investigation into the enigmatic box, the pair decided to rebury it and arranged to meet at the property to select an appropriate location.
Responding to his update, one user commented: "I think it's great that you are going to rebury the box. What a nice little adventure for you!"
A second user remarked: "Thank you for following up! Please do keep us informed of any further developments."
