A major emergency is unfolding in Los Angeles after a tunnel collapsed in Wilmington, leaving at least 15 people trapped underground.
The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) rushed to the scene following reports of the collapse, which is believed to have severed communication lines, making it impossible for emergency services to contact those inside.
Officials say the incident occurred deep beneath the 1700 block of South Figueroa Street, with the actual collapse taking place as far as six miles from the tunnel's only access point.
In response, the LAFD has deployed a massive operation, including all of its Urban Search and Rescue teams, to try and locate and free the trapped individuals.
The situation remains critical, with no confirmed contact yet made with the people inside the tunnel. Rescue crews are continuing to work against the clock in hopes of reaching them.
