Former New York governor Andrew Cuomo has issued a stark warning about the future of American politics, claiming the United States is facing internal collapse - and that Donald Trump is at the centre of the turmoil. Speaking during a Fox News appearance, Cuomo said the US is now "on the brink of a civil war" and tore into his own party for allowing what he described as "extreme radical left" forces to take control.
Cuomo didn't hold back as he launched a brutal attack on his Democratic rival Zohran Mamdani, the left-wing frontrunner in the race to become New York City mayor. He said: "This is still an ongoing civil war within the Democratic Party where you have this extreme radical left, that's what Zohran Mamdani represents. They are socialists. They are anti-business, they are anti-police, they're anti-law and order. They are anti-Israel and I am a moderate Democrat."

He went further, openly questioning Mamdani's capability to run the largest city in America: "Zohran Mamdani has never had a job.
"34 years old, he's been an assemblyman, passed three bills - worst attendance record in the New York State Assembly.
"They don't get that being mayor means you have to operate. You have to manage. Any given morning there could be a storm, there could be a shooting - God forbid there could be a terrorist attack."
Cuomo also used the fiery interview to defend his own record as he attempts a political comeback. "I have the experience and the record and confidence to actually do the job.
"I was governor for 11 years. I was Housing and Urban Development secretary under Bill Clinton. I was Attorney General. I know how to govern," he said.
Cuomo's comments come as a stunning new Gotham Polling and AARP survey revealed he is within striking distance of Mamdani - but only if Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa exits the race.
The poll shows 44.6% of New Yorkers would back Mamdani if Sliwa dropped out, compared to 40.7% for Cuomo - a gap within the 4-point margin of error.
With all three men still on the ballot, Mamdani currently dominates with 43.2%, trailed by Cuomo on 28.9% and Sliwa with 19.4%. But crucially, 78% of undecided voters are aged 50 or over, a demographic Cuomo is expected to perform strongly with.
New York continues to grapple with soaring rent, rising crime fears and record homelessness.
Mamdani - a 33-year-old Muslim socialist born in Uganda and raised in New York - shocked the political establishment in June by defeating Cuomo and outgoing Mayor Eric Adams in the Democratic primary.
His rise has triggered fierce debate, particularly over his criticism of Israel and refusal to condemn Hamas, positions that have sparked alarm among Jewish voters.
