Top trainer Mick Appleby has launched a fundraiser for a horsebox driver who lost four dogs in a fire which ravaged her home.

Helen Slater is well known on the horse racing circuit as she travels a lot of the Leicestershire trainer’s runners to their race meetings. Slater was not at her home in Blidworth, Nottinghamshire, on Monday when the blaze broke out but the damage was extensive. With no insurance, her friends and colleagues have set a £16,000 target to help with the extensive repair costs.

The gofundme post to help rebuild Slater's home says: “Mick Appleby Racing would like to help raise funds for a wonderful friend and colleague well known in the horse racing fraternity who has just had a devastating experience.

“On 4th August Helen’s home caught fire. The fire raged through the house and her poor dogs perished, despite the courage of Helen’s daughter who tried in vain to save them and was herself burnt.

“Unfortunately, there was no house insurance in place and so she has to replace everything herself.

“People that know Helen would say she is the most kind-hearted person and is absolutely devoted to her animals (many of which she has rescued and given homes to). “We would be so grateful if you would like to give to this worthy cause.”

Louise Jackson, Appleby’s owner liaison manager, said: “A lot of people in horse racing know Helen. She works for us a lot, there wouldn’t be many meetings she wouldn’t help us out with.

“I believe the lower part of the house suffered the worst of the damage and there was smoke damage as well and unfortunately no insurance.

“Helen and her family are such animal lovers. She takes in all the waifs and strays, including horses. All her money basically goes to the upkeep of her animals. It’s just horrendous what has happened.

“She is back at work because she needs the money but hopefully this fundraiser will give her a little bit of respite while she is working. I can’t believe how generous people have been. Every bit is really appreciated.”

Appleby, who has made his own donation, said: “Luckily Helen wasn’t in the house at the time but the fire killed all her four dogs and her daughter got burnt trying to save them but I don’t think that was too serious.”
