Brit tourist found dead by cleaner in Italy B&B as companion 'unaccounted for'

A British tourist has been found dead in a guesthouse in Italy after being discovered by a cleaner, with his companion unaccounted for.

The unnamed man was was discovered at the property in Genoa's Pra neighbourhood on Wednesday. He was staying with another person before the incident and it has been reported that their whereabouts are currently unknown. Initial investigations by Italian detectives suggested the deceased had taken his own life but police are now said to be considering all other options in the mysterious case.

According to local mediaLa Voce di Genova, the man had rented the B&B for a few days and the two people were due to have checked out last Wednesday.

Carabinieri have been reconstructing the movements of the two guests by analysing footage from local surveillance cameras and gathering statements from people who they met.

Local media reports say the British man was staying with a Dutch male at the property and police are keen to track him down and speak to him.

Genoa is a popular location for British tourists, not just for people visiting the historic city but also for many who arrive at the airport and travel to other nearby cities like Florence. The Mirror has contacted the Foreign Office for comment.

Meanwhile, the body of a Brit who vanished on New Year's Day during a hiking trip in the Italian Dolomites with his friend has been found.

Aziz Ziriat, 36, went missing alongside his friend Samuel Harris, 35, at the start of the year. A huge search was launched and his body was located on May 31. The Trentino Alpine and Speleological Rescue team recovered his remains.

The friends were known to have been near the town Tione Di Trento, near Riva Del Garda, on Lake Garda, before they went missing. The alarm was raised after the men stopped responding to messages and failed to get on their flight back to the UK on January 6.

Samuel was sadly found dead back in January, after his body had been buried under metres of deep snow. The search for the pair was complicated by poor weather conditions and heavy snow at high altitudes.

Search teams found items belonging to Aziz, like his mobile phone and a card, not far from his friends body in January. Despite this, the dozens of rescuers involved in the search were were not able to find the 36-year-old at the time.

The friends had travelled to The Dolomites to hike between huts in the mountain range for a New Year's trip abroad. Aziz's girlfriend, after the initial search for the friends started, called the pair "experienced hikers" but revealed she had last spoken to her boyfriend around 10am on New Year's Day.

Rebecca Dimmock also shared her boyfriend's last messages to her before the pair were not heard from again. In January, she said: "He sent some photos of the mountains and a couple of himself. He said his phone was about to die but he would write back to me properly soon."
