Due to today's hectic life and our bad food habits, many diseases are developing in the body. One of these is the problem of uric acid, which is directly related to our wrong eating habits. When uric acid increases in the body, it can cause many serious problems. By the way, uric acid is a waste product formed in our body. It is formed by the absorption of whatever we eat, especially things containing purine. Normally, our kidneys filter it out and expel it through urine.

Sometimes either our body starts producing more uric acid than required, or the kidneys are unable to excrete it properly. In such a situation, this uric acid starts accumulating in our blood, which is called hyperuricemia in medical language. When this excess uric acid increases in the blood, it turns into small, pointed crystals. Think, small pieces of glass! These crystals then start accumulating in our joints and other parts of the body and this is where a lot of painful and serious problems start.

These problems are caused by increased uric acid

  • Gout or unbearable joint pain: This is the most common and most painful result of increased uric acid. When these uric acid crystals get deposited in our joints, a sudden pain so intense that you cannot even move. This pain often occurs in the toes, ankles, knees and fingers. The joint in which this occurs becomes swollen, red and feels very hot to the touch.
  • Kidney stones: Increased uric acid is not just limited to the joints, it can also form crystals in our kidneys. These crystals gradually grow and turn into stones. If these stones become large, they can block the urinary tract. This can cause you problems like life-threatening pain in the lower back or abdomen, blood in urine, frequent urination, vomiting and nausea.
  • Kidney damage: The job of our kidneys is to filter impurities from the blood, which also includes uric acid. When uric acid remains high, there is a huge burden on our kidneys. These crystals gradually start damaging the inner parts of the kidney, which further increases the risk of chronic kidney disease and kidney failure.
  • High blood pressure: You may be surprised to know this, but research shows that increased uric acid may be linked to high blood pressure. Uric acid can shrink our blood vessels and make them stiff. This prevents blood from flowing properly and increases your blood pressure.
  • Metabolic syndrome: Metabolic syndrome is a bundle of many health problems, including obesity around the abdomen, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, high triglycerides. Many studies suggest that uric acid may play an important role in increasing insulin resistance, which is a major cause of metabolic syndrome.
  • Risk of heart disease: When uric acid levels are high, it can cause inflammation and stress in our blood vessels. This damages the inner lining of the vessels and makes them stiffer and less flexible. Over time, this can increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and even sudden heart attacks.

Often, the initial symptoms of increased uric acid are not visible. Therefore, it is very important to keep an eye on your health and get regular checkups done. If you feel any of the symptoms mentioned above, then definitely consult a doctor without delay.
