Oil pulling is an Ayurvedic home remedy that gives relief from problems like bad breath, swollen gums, and cavities. This is a natural remedy done with coconut or sesame oil, which cleans the mouth.

People use many types of toothpaste and mouthwash to take care of their teeth and gums, but oil pulling, an age-old technique in Ayurveda, is in the news again these days. This simple but effective home remedy is considered effective in removing bacteria from the mouth and maintaining hygiene. In such a situation, let us now tell you how oil pulling can provide relief from bad breath to gum inflammation.
What is oil pulling and how does it work?
Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic process in which sesame or coconut oil is kept in the mouth and swished for 10 to 20 minutes. It is believed that this oil pulls out toxins, bacteria and accumulated debris from the surface of the mouth. After this, the oil is spit out. Incorporating this technique into the daily routine provides relief from problems like bad breath, plaque, swollen gums and cavities.
Protection from cavity causing bacteria
Bacteria like Streptococcus mutans found in the mouth damage the teeth. Oil pulling reduces their number and thus reduces the risk of cavities.
Relief from swollen gums
Regular oil pulling can reduce swelling and bleeding of the gums. This reduces the risk of problems like gingivitis.
Prevention of plaque accumulation:
Rinsing with oil reduces the plaque build-up on teeth. This reduces the chances of periodontal diseases.
Get rid of bad breath.
The oil cleans the odor-causing bacteria present in the mouth. This gives fresh breath, that too without chemical mouthwash.
Chemical-Free Option
The coconut or sesame oil used in oil pulling is natural and contains neither alcohol nor any chemicals, making it a safe and natural option.
Keep these things in mind,
Some people may be allergic to coconut oil, so consult a doctor before using it or do a patch test. Apart from this, initially, rotating the oil for 20 minutes can cause fatigue in the jaw. In such a situation, do it for a short time in the beginning. Later gradually increase its time. On the other hand, if you use a mouthwash or toothpaste with any special medicine, then start oil pulling only after asking the doctor.
How to do Oil Pulling Step by Step
- First of all, high quality, organic, cold pressed and virgin coconut oil is considered the best option for oil pulling.
