India is witnessing intense rainfall across several regions on Monday, with authorities warning of continuing flood risks in parts of the east. North, central, and eastern states are under the influence of a western disturbance and residual monsoon systems, bringing widespread showers, thunderstorms, and strong winds.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has cautioned residents about possible flooding, waterlogging, and traffic disruptions, urging vigilance, especially in areas already affected by extreme weather over the past week.
In West Bengal, torrential rain has compounded an ongoing disaster in the Darjeeling hills, leaving 28 dead and dozens missing.
Temperatures are expected to drop in some regions due to cloud cover and rainfall, with gusty winds likely to intensify conditions, making travel and daily routines challenging.
India Weather Today: Floods ravage West Bengal
North Bengal continues to reel under the impact of heavy rainfall and flash floods. Mirik and nearby towns remain cut off after the collapse of the Balasan river bridge, the only direct route to Siliguri. Thirteen bodies have been recovered in Mirik, with ten others, including tourist Himadri Purkayet from Kolkata, still missing. Rescue teams from the Army and NDRF are operating in the affected areas.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held an emergency meeting on Sunday and said she would visit the disaster zones today. “Several areas in both north and south Bengal have been flooded due to sudden huge rain and excessive river waters from Bhutan and Sikkim,” she posted on X. “Rainfall exceeded 300mm in 12 hours last night. I convey my heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and have ordered immediate assistance.”
With Mahananda, Jaldhaka, and Teesta rivers running above danger levels, forests have been submerged, forcing wildlife such as elephants, rhinos, and deer to flee. Authorities have closed all tourist spots and urged visitors to remain in safe locations.
Delhi-NCR: Rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds today
After a calm weekend, Delhi is set for a wet spell today.
The IMD forecasts widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, with gusty winds of 30 to 40 kmph, gusting up to 50 kmph. Day temperatures will fall to 31°C to 33°C, below normal by up to three degrees, while night temperatures are expected between 23°C and 25°C.
Residents are advised to exercise caution due to potential waterlogging and localized flooding. Cloudy skies and occasional heavy showers are likely to continue through the day, affecting traffic and outdoor activities.
Eastern and central India: Heavy to very heavy rain continues
States including Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, eastern Madhya Pradesh, eastern Uttar Pradesh, and Gangetic West Bengal are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall today.
IMD has warned of the risk of river overflows and landslides in vulnerable regions. Coastal Odisha and Andhra Pradesh have already reported gusty winds and flooding in low-lying areas over the past days.
Northwest India: Western disturbance brings showers
Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi are under the influence of a western disturbance, bringing widespread rainfall and thunderstorms.
Hilly regions may also experience gusty winds, that are expected to disrupt normal activities in plains.
IMD has defined rainfall intensity for today as follows: heavy rain between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm, very heavy between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm, and extremely heavy exceeding 204.4 mm.
