Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Friday termed the US tariffs imposed on India a "temporary challenge" and said there should be no compromise on the country's interests. Naidu, a key NDA ally, said he was confident that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would take it forward in the best possible manner.
Speaking at the second edition of the ET World Leaders Forum in New Delhi, Naidu said: "India has seen many challenges in the past. Every challenge is an opportunity. But at the same time there should be no compromise. Nobody can stop the power that India is. These are temporary setbacks."
Naidu, who returned as Andhra's chief minister after a landslide election victory in 2024, said he was confident that he would be able to attract ₹10 lakh crore investments for the state.
When asked about his election promises and freebies being offered by the state, Naidu said: "I am working for the people. It is my duty to think about their welfare. At the same time, it is also my duty to generate wealth. I am confident that over the next five years, we will be able to attract ₹10 lakh crore of investments." He attributed this confidence to ease and speed of doing business.
Naidu, whose Telugu Desam Party (TDP) provides crucial support to the NDA government with its 16 MPs, threw his weight behind the coalition's vice-presidential candidate. When asked if the Opposition's choice of a Telugu had made him weigh his options, Naidu said: "We have a coalition government both in Delhi and Andhra Pradesh. Where is the question of not supporting?"
In a week when Parliament saw repeated disruptions over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision exercise in Bihar, Naidu toed a careful line. When asked what the ideal gap between an electoral roll revision and election should be, Naidu said: "It's a continuous process. Before polls there will be intensive revision."
Naidu's party had submitted to the Election Commission that there should be a six-month difference between an intensive revision of the voters' rolls and polls.
Naidu said while India provides products to the world, it does not contribute to global brands. "Our aim should be to produce global brands," he said.
