Indian Railways is now starting the system of checking bag weight and size at big stations like airports. Passengers will have to pay an extra charge for luggage more than the prescribed limit.
Lakhs of passengers travel by train every day in India. Railways keep implementing new rules and regulations keeping in view the safety of its passengers. Now a big change is going to happen for rail passengers. Just like the luggage of passengers is weighed and screened at the airport, similarly now the bags of passengers will be weighed at big railway stations too. If the luggage is more than the prescribed limit, passengers will also have to pay extra charge like air passengers.
The system will start at many big stations including Prayagraj
North Central Railway has decided to start this system from the major stations of Prayagraj division. These include Prayagraj Junction, Prayagraj Chheoki, Subedarganj, Kanpur Central, Mirzapur, Tundla, Aligarh Junction, Govindpuri and Etawah stations. Electronic luggage machines will soon be installed at these places, where the bag of the passengers will be weighed and only then will they be allowed entry to the platform.
Not only the weight but also the size of the bag will be checked
Railways has clarified that not only the weight but also the size of the bag will be checked. If a passenger's bag is so big that it occupies more space in the coach, then a penalty can be imposed on it. That is, even if the weight is less, a large size bag can create problems.
How much luggage can passengers carry in which coach
Indian Railways has fixed the limit of free luggage according to the class of passengers. According to this limit, passengers of First AC can carry up to 70 kg of luggage. At the same time, passengers of Second AC can carry up to 50 kg and those of Third AC can carry up to 40 kg. Apart from these, those of Sleeper class can also carry up to 40 kg and those of General and Second Sitting can carry up to 35 kg of luggage. According to the rules of the railways, there will be a relaxation of carrying up to 10 kg more luggage than the prescribed limit, but if the weight is more than that, the passengers will have to go to the station and book the luggage.
Penalty will have to be paid for luggage exceeding the prescribed limit
If a passenger is found carrying more luggage than the booking, then he will be charged. This charge will be one and a half times more than the normal rate. That is, carrying more weight than the limit without booking can be heavy on the pocket.
Why is this rule necessary
According to railway officials, this rule has been made keeping in mind both the safety and convenience of the passengers. Many times passengers carry so much luggage with them that other passengers in the coach face problems. Apart from this, more luggage can also pose a threat in terms of security. Railways is already taking continuous steps to control the increasing crowd during the festival season and summer holidays, in this context, control over luggage is also considered an important step.
